Tree Feeding

Tree Feeding or fertilizing is essential to promote maximum growth in young trees. It can also help in some cases to rejuvenate a tree that has suffered damage or diminished health due to pests, disease or broken branches. The method most commonly used to fertilize trees called deep root feeding. A slow release fertilizer is applied in small holes at a depth where the tree’s roots can reach it with minimal competition from turf grass or other plants. A balanced blend or high-nitrogen formula can be chosen based on soil conditions or other factors.

Bracing / Cabling

Bracing and cabling can be beneficial in preventing or even correcting a structural failure. Preventative bracing is a measure that may be recommendable upon assessment by an arborist. If any stem has broken, there is usually nothing that can be done to mend it. Removing the detached pieces, trimming the remaining stub, and possibly some other treatment such as fertilizing could be applied. If a tree has been pushed over by force - wind, another tree falling on it, etc. - bracing may be an option used to right the tree and hold it in place.

Lightning Protection

LPS (Lightning Protection Systems) for trees are very much like LPS for buildings: the main components are air terminals, conductors, and grounding electrodes. Among trees common to our area, species that are most vulnerable to lightning include oak, maple, poplar, pine, ash, hemlock, elm and sycamore.

Assessments

An Arborists Assessment can be valuable in determining a course of action for a tree. For example, an HOA may accept an assessment for consideration when deciding to allow removal of a tree that may become hazardous.

Wood Chips

Wood Chips can be used as a ground cover to prevent weeds from growing, maintain a cleaner yard that won’t track dirt and mud, and generally improve appearance. Wood Chips are also recommended for use as a barrier for insects - particularly ticks - at the edge between a wooded section and grass. Woodchips are generally a much less expensive alternative to other types of mulch, and are often used in backyards, away from the house, as opposed to in more manicured beds. Ashburn Tree can deliver, and spread wood chips any time of year.
